Why impact doors are different
All of Broward County is in Florida's High-Velocity Hurricane Zone. Impact doors here are approved as a complete assembly — door, frame, glass and hardware tested together — not as loose parts. If you swap a tested lock for one that wasn't part of that test, the approval may not cover the door anymore (National Lock Supply).
How we do it
- Find the approval. It's usually a Miami-Dade NOA or Florida Product Approval number on a label on the door edge or frame, or in your closing papers.
- Read which hardware is allowed. The approval lists the lock types tested with the door.
- Install a matching lock, or rekey the existing one if it still works — rekeying doesn't change the hardware at all.
Before hurricane season
Hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30. Check now that:
- The deadbolt fully extends into the strike
- Any top and bottom bolts on a double door lock fully
- Multi-point locks engage at every point when you lift the handle A door that "almost" locks is the one that fails in high wind.
Broward County's own hurricane guide asks for at least three hinges and a deadbolt with a bolt throw of at least 1 inch on entry doors, and head and foot bolts on the inactive half of a double door (Broward County Hurricane Preparedness Guide). A short-throw or loose deadbolt on an older Sunrise door is a lock-change job; missing head and foot bolts on a double door are worth fitting too, with hardware that matches the door's approval.
After a storm
Wind-driven rain swells wood frames and shifts doors. If a deadbolt that turned fine in May now drags, or the bolt no longer lines up with the strike, don't force the key — that's how keys snap. Call us; an adjustment of the strike is often all it takes. The City of Sunrise's hurricane page lists the city and county numbers to keep handy during the season (City of Sunrise).
Common questions
Is rekeying an impact door lock safe for the approval?
Yes. Rekeying changes only the pins inside; the tested hardware stays.
Do I need a permit to change the lock?
We fit hardware that matches the door's approval and leave the door itself alone. Replacing a whole impact door is a permitted job for a door contractor, not a locksmith.
Which Sunrise homes have these doors?
Sunrise Golf Village, from the 1960s, has some of the oldest houses in western Broward, so any impact door there is a later replacement; the newer Sawgrass-area communities usually have an association that reviews exterior changes (Republic Window). Rekeying keeps the look and the approval unchanged.
Can you fix a multi-point lock that won't engage?
Often yes — usually an adjustment or a gearbox. Price on the phone after you describe it.
Locked out? Call — the price comes first.
Same price at any hour. A Sunrise technician comes to you.
