Signs it's time to replace, not rekey
- The key turns hard or only at an angle
- The deadbolt doesn't fully extend, so you push or lift the door to lock it
- Rust or pitting on the face — humidity and sprinklers do this to many 1970s–80s locks in Sunrise
- A 1960s door in Sunrise Golf Village, the city's original core and home to some of the oldest houses in western Broward (Republic Window), where the bore no longer matches today's locks
- The lock was forced in a break-in attempt
Why so many Sunrise locks are due
Sunrise's median home was built in 1982, and roughly 64% of all housing units date from 1970–1989 (ACS figures via Point2). After forty-plus humid summers, many locksets have a sagging latch or a bolt that no longer reaches the strike. Those with worn internal parts are worth replacing; the rest can usually be rekeyed. We tell you which is which, door by door.
How a lock change goes
- On the phone: name the doors and the brand, or text a photo of the lock and door edge, so the right part comes on the truck.
- At the door: the technician shows ID and checks that you own or rent the home.
- Old lock out, door checked. If the strike is misaligned or the frame is soft, you hear about it and the cost before anything else.
- New lock in and adjusted so the bolt throws all the way without lifting or pushing the door.
- Keys tested in every door.
What to have ready
- Photo ID with the address, or a lease plus ID. Renters: ask your landlord first — your lease may say who is allowed to change the locks.
- In a condo or HOA, your association may need a key or code afterward — see condo lock changes.
Change the lock or just the keys?
If the lock works and you only want old keys to stop working, a rekey is cheaper: $95 for the first lock, $45 for each extra on the same visit. For hurricane-rated doors, read impact-door locks first.
Common questions
Can I buy the lock myself and have you install it?
Yes. Fitting a lock you bought online or at a hardware store is $95 labor. Text us the box photo and we check it fits your door before we come.
How often should locks be replaced?
There's no fixed schedule. Replace a lock when it shows the signs listed above, when it was forced, or when you want a stronger grade; if it still works and you only want new keys, rekey it. A lock that takes daily sprinkler spray or afternoon downpours tends to wear out first.
Do you install keyed-alike sets?
Yes — a set keyed alike means one key for all doors.
Which brands do you carry on the truck?
Schlage and Kwikset as standard, in Grade 1 and Grade 2 deadbolts. Finishes: satin nickel, matte black, or coastal stainless (626) if salt air or sprinklers eat the old one. High-security cylinders such as Medeco and Mul-T-Lock are quoted before ordering. Every new lock comes with 2 keys; extra copies are $5.
Is there a warranty on the new lock?
Six months on our installation: if it stops locking right in that window, we return and fix it free. The maker's warranty covers the lock itself — on Schlage and Kwikset residential locks, lifetime for mechanics and finish, one year for electronics.
